Northern Thailand is renowned for intricate woodcarvings. The shavings and sawdust that are created in the process have been creatively " recycled" and put to good use. The sawdust is mixed with a glue to form a clay which is molded, carved, and then painted to form these detailed figures. Some are mounted on or around wooden bases which are also the discards of the woodcarvers. The pieces will vary considerably depending on the wood used for the base.
